Jesus, Saginaw County

Storyteller: Nick Kennedy

Jesus is 19 years old and has been working at Home Depot in freight and receiving for a few months now. Originally, he only worked part time during the night shift hours from nine o’clock at night to one o’clock in the morning. Now he currently is taking part in full time hours from seven o’clock in the evening to three o’clock in the morning. Other workers there recently got tested positive for Covid. He and one other coworker began working more and took over those that worked full time hours. Dating back to March, Jesus heard about Covid-19 through social media while being at home. He remembers seeing many different sources saying that the virus began and formed in China. His dad is of those that is at a higher risk and they both kept to the safe precautions to keep each other safe by not leaving the house unless they needed to. Once the initial lockdown was over, he found his job at Home Depot and began learning ways he could help provide and give himself a better living while being in the depth of the pandemic. He misses spending time with friends weekly and visiting members of the family along with losing access to movies and fun places to go. While at work he keeps himself clean and follows all the rules but there is only one thing that annoys him most, which is his glasses being fogged up by a mask and breathing being harder while lifting and moving equipment. He and his friends began to use technology such as video games to stay in touch and spend time together even if it meant no physical interaction. Covid-19 altogether has not been a big issue for him, but he understands the risks others could be going through. Video games and technology have always been some of his favorite things and with access to them, he still feels as if he has not lost all connection to the things, he likes most.
